NC State · Collegiate Wind Competition

We design, build & test real wind turbines.

Windpack is NC State's team in the Collegiate Wind Competition, engineering a complete turbine and the business case behind it on a national stage.

Who we are

NC State's wind energy team - student-led, end to end.

Every year, the Collegiate Wind Competition challenges college teams to build a real, working wind turbine from scratch and make the business case for where to put one. Windpack competes in both halves: our engineering teams design and build the turbine itself, while our Project Development team researches real sites, analyzes wind data, and presents a full project plan.

  • Mechanical - blades, drivetrain, and structural design
  • Electrical - power electronics, controls & data monitoring
  • Project Development - siting, wind resource & the business case
What we do

Three teams, one turbine

Specialized teams work in parallel to field a complete wind energy system - no prior experience required to start on any of them.

Mechanical

From blade aerodynamics and 3D-printed hubs to the drivetrain and yaw system, the mechanical team turns CAD into a turbine that survives the wind tunnel.

Electrical

Power electronics, generator integration, safety load circuits, and the control system that keeps the turbine producing cleanly across changing wind speeds.

Project Development

Wind resource assessment, site selection, environmental review, financials, and outreach - the full real-world case for building a wind farm.
